  1. I have an ancestor W R Grott, of which I have a business card giving the address of Danzig Brabank No8 and Neufahrwasser Schleuse No17 and him being a ship builder. I have a Benjamin Wilhelm Grott who married Florentine Spill, they had 3 children – Amilie Florentin Grott who married Peter Boldt – Emilie Betty Grott who married Julius Wilhelm Voelker and a Grott (who I think may be W R, (as I don’t have a christian name for this one yet)) who married an unknown and had 3 children – Clara, Franz and Olga.
Peter Boldt and Amilie had a daughter Antoine Wilhemine Friederike, she married Max Kiesewetter who is my Great grandfather.
Max Kiesewetter was a well known Poet. His son Hans Kiesewetter married Johanne Margarete Wagner and had 2 daughters Doris and Gerda.
Gerda (my mother) married John Dannreuther who was my father.

  2. Thank you for your comments. It is possible that there is a connection, but unfortunately none of the names tie in, although interestingly Ferdinand’s first son was named William (Wilhelm) and of course his father was Frederick (Friedrich). I know for sure now that Ferdinand was born in January 1824 in Danzig, and that he went to sea at the age of 13. The ships he sailed on to begin with were all registered in Danzig. Perhaps Ferdinand was a brother/cousin/nephew of your W R Grott. Your family history looks interesting too – I’m frustrated at being unable to trace Ferdinand’s line further than the name of his father and mother.

  3. Hello,
I have good news for you. Your Great Great Grandfather Ferdinand was born in Danzig as Jacob Ferdinand Groth, on January 19, 1824 and was baptised in February 1824 in St. Barbara’s church. He had three younger brothers. His mother died on April 1854 and father one year later, on July 1855. I would like to send you more details and scans, contact me via e-mail, please.
